Priest Still Alive With New Director

You never really hear about a project falling apart until it begins to make a comeback months or years later. One such example is Priest. A couple years back the adaptation of the comicbook looked ready to go with Andrew Douglas to direct and Gerard Butler to star.

Great combo, right? Well, that didn't work out in the end, and Screen Gems is trying again with Scott Charles Stewart behind the camera.

An adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, Priest is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Scribe Cory Goodman has already wrote the screenplay.

Bringing Stewart on for Priest places Screen Gems even closer to the director. He will make his feature directorial debut with the banner's biblical apocalyptic thriller Legion.

When Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror) exited Priest, originally set to star Gerard Butler, over creative differences the project went silent for a good year or so. Now, The Hollywood Reporter states Scott Charles Stewart is picking up the reins of this horror western and will direct for Screen Gems.

Cory Goodman penned Priest, an adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book which tells of a "warrior priest" tracking a band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Michael De Luca, Mitchell Peck and Stars Road Entertainment's Josh Donen are producing.

Stewart also directed Legion - another Screen Gems film slated to bow in early 2010. Prior to cutting his teeth in the director's chair on that picture, he co-founded the visual effects shop Orphanage (Hellboy, Jeepers Creepers II).

The boarding of Stewart blesses "Priest" with new life; the project almost came together a couple of years ago with Gerard Butler and Steven Strait under the direction of Andrew Douglas but fell apart. PRIEST sees Stewart back under Screen Gems' wings, as he is making his directorial debut with the company's biblical apocalyptic thriller LEGION.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Charles Stewart has been signed to helm the long-mooted film version of the horror/Western manga PRIEST. Screen Gems, for which Stewart recently directed LEGION, will release the movie.
The PRIEST comics, published by TokyoPop, follow the title character, a man of the cloth in a postapocalyptic world who goes against his church and teams with a young sheriff to rescue his niece from a gang of evil vampires who have abducted her. The adaptation was scripted by Cory Goodman, who has also penned a remake of David Cronenberg’s THE BROOD for Spyglass Entertainment, with Michael De Luca, Josh Donen and Mitchell Peck producing.
A few years ago, PRIEST was to have been directed by Andrew (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR) Douglas with Gerard Butler and Steven Strait starring, but that version never came together. LEGION, the feature debut of former visual FX artist Stewart (who co-founded the Orphanage shop), is about a group of people stranded in a Southwestern diner during a war between good and evil angels and will be released by Screen Gems on January 22, 2010.

Screen Gems is loading another picture into its 2010 arsenal. Priest, the horror-actioner, set in a world ravaged by a war between man and vampires, is slated for release August 13, 2010.

The film will be directed by Scott Stewart; this will be his second film to debut next year after January's Legion. In the film, a warrior priest turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Gerard Butler was once attached when Andrew Douglas was at the helm.

Priest is currently the first horror film to stake out space that August. However, there are rumors that if Platinum Dunes decides to move ahead on Friday the 13th Part 2, they'll be seeking that same August 13th spot because it is, after all, a Friday the 13th.

There's no way in the world a horror fan can whip out that quote from Peter Jackson's Dead Alive (or Brain Dead for you purists out there) without cracking a smile and reliving the badassery of it all in our heads. Well holy shit. Screen Gems announced today that yet another priest will soon be kicking ass!

Shock Till You Drop learned today that Priest, which was originally supposed to star Gerard Butler with Andrew Douglas at the helm, has found itself a new director in Scott Stewart and is slated for release August 13, 2010.

The flick is an adaptation of the action-horror TokyoPop comic book set in a world that has been ravaged by vampires. Sign me up, and break out the butter-flavored Eucharists! I am there!

Devo dire che questo attore non mi dispiace: biondo, pallido, magro al limite dello smunto con quegli occhi così chiari da sembrare spiritati. Sembra una buona scelta... Staremo a vedere.

Resta il fatto che è un dispiacere che GB perda questo ruolo spiritualmente tormentato ma anche fisico. Mi consola una supposizione: forse se avesse proseguito sulla strada di Priest avrebbe dovuto rinunciare a Burns per una questione di accavallamenti.

Indubbiamente l' aspetto "segalino " di Bettany ha influito molto , ma è anche un buon attore , e senza dubbio ha un cachet piu' basso di Gerard...

Peccato... Il fumetto è sempre un terno al lotto . Si possono fare film ottimi o addirittura magnifici , ma anche emerite stupidaggini...

Credo che a Paul Bettany abbia fatto "buon pro" l'aver interpretato l'albino Silas ne Il Codice Da Vinci.

Francamente mentre guardavo la sua foto tutto pesto, cercavo di immaginarmi Gerard al suo posto e diciamo che forse per entrare bene in parte avrebbe dovuto perdere qualche chilo e magari un allungamento di chioma per avere un'aria sofferta, l'immancabile barba incolta e uno sguardo che più spiritato non si potrebbe. Voilà, mesdames, Ivan Isaac...

Chissà, come riuscirà il film...
